ISIE 2027: A Shared Space for Humans and Nature

The International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE) invites researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and industry leaders from around the world to submit abstracts for ISIE 2027.

The theme of ISIE 2027, A Shared Space for Humans and Nature, recognizes that human well-being, economic activity, and ecological systems are fundamentally interconnected. Inspired by the “Spaceship Earth” metaphor, the conference presents studies related to the finite resources, environmental boundaries, and shared socio-ecological systems that sustain life. As societies confront climate change, biodiversity loss, resource scarcity, in combination with global growth, industrial ecology offers essential tools and perspectives for understanding and managing these challenges.

ISIE 2027 is set 40 years after the Brundtland Report was published. ISIE 2027 will showcase the full breadth of industrial ecology research and applications. We welcome contributions that advance understanding of the interactions between human and natural systems, quantify environmental pressures and resource use, and develop innovative pathways toward regenerative, resilient, and equitable futures. We encourage submissions from all areas of industrial ecology and sustainability research. Submissions may address methodological advances, empirical analyses, case studies, policy applications, and transdisciplinary approaches that bridge science, practice, and decision-making. The conference will stimulate a global discussion and elevate contributions from emerging economies.

Researchers at all career stages are encouraged to participate. The conference will foster dialogue across disciplines, sectors, and regions, creating opportunities for collaboration toward sustainable and regenerative futures.

Presentation Formats

Abstracts can be submitted for poster - or oral presentation.

General rules for abstract submission

• All abstracts must be submitted online through the abstract submission system by the deadline. Abstracts that are sent via e-mail will not be considered.
• Please do NOT submit multiple copies of the same abstract.
• The submitting author is required to ensure that all co-authors are aware of the content of the abstract before submission.
• All correspondences pertaining to the submitted abstract will be addressed to the submitting author. It is the submitting author’s responsibility to inform the co-authors.
• It is the authors’ responsibility to submit a correct abstract. Any errors in spelling, grammar or scientific fact will be reproduced as typed by the author.
• Each presenting author may submit a maximum of one abstract.
• Only abstracts from registered presenters who have completed payment are included in the program.

Submission guidelines:

• Abstracts must be written in English.
• Use acronyms only when necessary and define all non-standard abbreviations and concepts in your abstract at first use.
• Please ensure complete listing and correct order of all (co-) authors, and indicate who will be the presenting author.
• Abstract titles can contain a maximum of 20 words (no abbreviations) and should not be written with all capitals.
• Abstract are submitted in a text format.
• The abstract body should not exceed 250 words for poster presentations and 500 words for oral presentations and should consist of the four sections: Objective, Material and Methods, Results, Conclusion.
  • Phrases such as “results will be discussed” or “data will be presented” should not be used.
• Please enter at least 2 and a maximum of 5 keywords from the official keyword list (see below).
• Images, tables, diagrams and graphs are not accepted and will not be displayed.
• All submitted abstracts can be edited until the submission deadline. To view or edit your abstract, use the link provided in your submission confirmation email.

Topics and Keywords

• The main topic that is relevant for your abstract must be selected during the submission process. The Scientific Committee reserves the right to change the topics during the abstract review process.
• In addition, you can then select a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 keywords from the official keyword list.

Review Process and Notifications of Acceptance:

• All submitted abstracts will be scored and passed through a review process after the submission closes.
• The notification of acceptance will be sent by the end of January (subject to change) to the presenting author’s e-mail address.
• If your abstract is accepted, you will be invited to present at the conference. Abstracts can only be presented by authors attending the conference in person.
