European Climate and Energy Modelling Forums workshop
European Climate and Energy Modelling Forums
Energy and climate models provide insightful information to plan a carbon neutral future. This workshop discusses latest research trends and ideas in developing collaborative modelling exercises. The workshop will consist of these main parts:
- Landscape on Energy and Climate modelling projects and initiatives
- Research trends and challenges in energy system modelling
- Presentation of inter-comparison modelling tools for joint assessments
Additionally, there will be a dedicated session to discuss the synergies between Forum activities, EU projects, and the European Climate and Energy Modelling Platform (ECEMP), co-hosted by the European Commission.
The workshop will bring together European experts in energy and climate modelling and is organized by the European Climate and Energy Modelling Forum (ECEMF) in collaboration with the European Forum for Energy and Climate Transition (EFECT). It is supported by iDesignRES, related EU projects, and other relevant initiatives in the field.

14:10 – 14:35 Coffee Break
14:35 – 16:20 Model Comparison Exercise – the FutureSight tool
Moderator: Will Usher (KTH)
Presentation on the model comparison exercise at the centre of the ECEMF project. Participants have a hands-on experience on the use of the ECEMF’s open-source FutureSight tool to create visualisations of the publicly available model results. This interactive session explores alternative pathways to net zero found in the scenario database and discuss their findings with the workshop participants.
Open panel discussion – EFECT, ECEMF, alignment with ECEMP
Moderator: Asgeir Tomasgard (NTNU)
Members of the EFECT network, ECEMF project and EU projects will discuss the need for community led model comparison exercise to support national and European policy making. There is a need to better coordinate the European energy and climate research community, but designing a business model that supports this coordination role is difficult. How and why should the energy and climate research community organise themselves? How can we continue the good work of existing model comparison exercises, but make them more open and inclusive?
16:20 – 16:30 Closing and wrap up
Raquel Santos Jorge (NTNU) and Sebastian Zwickl-Bernhard (TU Wien)
