Design of flow-based market coupling Duplicate 9

Making flow-based market coupling work in the Nordics

Price formation and power flows in the Nordic electricity market have for decades relied on well-established market-clearing mechanisms. A major recent change is the introduction of flow-based market coupling, which aims to improve the utilisation of the transmission grid in the market-clearing process.

While flow-based market coupling has the potential to increase efficiency, it also introduces new complexities and challenges related to transparency, predictability, and stakeholder understanding. This workshop brings together researchers, market actors, and system operators to discuss:

  • What flow-based market coupling is – from technical, economic, and practical perspectives
  • Experiences with flow-based market coupling in the Nordic context so far
  • How the mechanism can be made more transparent while ensuring efficient market outcomes

The target audience includes participants in the policy debate on electricity market design, as well as producers, grid owners, authorities, and researchers working with power markets and power systems.
