Maria Varteressian currently serves as State Secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she is responsible for matters relating to Europe, the EU and the EEA, Arctic affairs, sustainability, the ocean, climate, energy and environmental policy, and the green transition.
Varteressian has had a notable and comprehensive career in both government and the Norwegian parliament, and has expertise within a number of areas, including Arctic affairs and environmental and climate policy. Before taking up the post as State Secretary under the Minister of Foreign Affairs, she served as political adviser to the then Minister for Climate and Environment, Espen Barth Eide, for four years. She later transitioned to a role as political adviser for the Labour Party’s parliamentary foreign affairs and defense faction.
Maria Varteressian holds a master’s degree in global politics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Agder.
