CDR & Negative Emission Markets

Negative Emissions and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is increasingly becoming mainstream mitigation policy.

The workshop on the topic held during the NTNU Energy Transition Week in 2022, left us with the following:

To meet the climate ambitions, the emerging Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) industry must grow fast and become sizeable as will the need for permanent geological storage of CO₂ that comes with it. This industry will need to be developed on terms that are acceptable to the natural systems which our human systems rely on.

“What we are basically looking at is how to develop a CDR industry probably using both nature-based solutions and industrial techniques like the fossil fuels industry and establishing social practices in an economy at record pace. So, it is a fundamental challenge.” — J. Røttereng, Enova SF.

Two years after, it is legitimate to ask the questions - where are we now, what and where are the key challenges, what and how to focus to unlock the potential required?

In this workshop we will look at the progress in CDR technologies, hereunder also examples on adoption and scaling through business build. Further, we will take a closer look at the negative emission markets including policies and regulations to stimulate the markets and the investment appetite, how they have evolved, and what actions are taken and are planned to be taken to make them run at scale.
