Detlef van Vuuren

Detlef van Vuuren (1970) is professor in Integrated Assessment of Global Environmental Change at the Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University and senior researcher at PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency leading the IMAGE integrated assessment modeling team. His work concentrates on long-term model-based scenarios of global environmental problems. He has published more than 340 articles in refereed journals including high profile journals like Nature and Science. He is also listed among the most highly cited researchers worldwide.

He participates in various research organizations in the field of environmental research. He is member of the board of the Integrated Assessment Modelling Consortium (IAMC), the Global Carbon Project, the Earth Commission and member of the steering board of ISIMIP. He participates in the editorial board of Climatic Change, Earth System Dynamics and Global Environmental Change. He is also a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and the Arts in the Netherlands.

Detlef van Vuuren has been active in various research projects and assessments, leading several EU funded projects. He had a coordinating role in the development of the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) and Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs) now used in the IPCC’s assessments. Detlef van Vuuren has participated as (Coordinating) Lead Author in various assessments such as those of IPCC, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and UNEP’s Global Environmental Outlook. Detlef van Vuuren has also a member of the scientific boards of several DG Research projects. For this work, Detlef van Vuuren was awarded the first IAMC Annual Award of Excellent Contributions to Integrated Assessment and in 2018, the Huibregtsenprijs for excellent socially-relevant research.
