GigatonCCS
Gigaton CCS
It is widely recognized that CCS deployment at gigaton scale is vital for a just and sustainable transition to net-zero emissions. CCS offers the potential to significantly reduce emissions from energy and industrial processes, particularly the decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries such as cement, steel, and waste handling, as well as enabling large-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR).
To reach gigaton-scale CCS targets, technical, financial, regulatory and coordinatory challenges must be overcome. Upscaling of CCS will require a solid investment base, new supply chains and value chains, the development of robust business models and the demonstration and deployment of technologies at a scale.
Large-scale CCS will play a pivotal role in reaching ambitious international emissions reductions targets. To reach net-zero emissions, upscaling CCS from megatons to gigatons of permanent CO2 stored is required. Interest in CCS as a climate mitigation tool is at an all-time-high. Are we getting closer to the tipping point leading us in the right direction with CCS implementation?
In this workshop we will cover why gigaton CCS is needed and touch upon different pathways as well as conflicting perceptions. We will discuss whether we have the technology capabilities to continue to build momentum in CCS deployment and identify remaining knowledge gaps to address. Finally, we will take a closer look at applications of CCS to different segments, hereby also look into effects of different policies and incentives to build momentum.

About
The workshop "Gigaton CCS" workshop was held 15 March 2024 at the NTNU Energy Transition Week.
The workshop covered various aspects of CCS, including its necessity for reaching climate goals, current state and projections, technologies involved, industry readiness, and policy strategies, particularly from the EU. The workshop's findings are summarized in the report underneath.
