How do I get access to a reading/study room at the library.

The master agreement

The master agreement

As a master student you need to sign a master agreement as soon as you have been assigned a supervisor for the master's thesis. The agreement is a guiding collaboration agreement between you as a student and the department and outlines both your rights and your duties as a master's student.

The master agreement

Financial support for the master's project.

Financial support for the master's project.

Financial support for fieldwork in connection with the master's thesis.
It is often necessary to carry out fieldwork as part of the data collection for the master's thesis, either abroad or at home.
The institute therefore has a support scheme that can cover such expenses. Students can be reimbursed up to NOK 6,000 for expenses incurred during fieldwork, such as visits to archive, travels for interviews, participation in relevant conferences. Books and other equipment are not covered.
What do you (as a student) have to do?

Clarify first with your supervisor that the fieldwork is relevant to the master thesis and ask her/him to send an e-mail to studieveiledning-ihs@hf.ntnu.no to confirm that these expenses are for relevant fieldwork.
Fill out the travel refund form after the stay. All receipts/invoices must be provided. Attach/paste the receipts/invoices onto a blank sheet and submit with the refund form to the administration office (ekspedisjon).

Conducting Interviews for the master thesis

Conducting Interviews for the master thesis

If you plan on conducting interviews as part of your Master Thesis, you are obliged to provide information about people for your master's project e.g. at the interview you are obliged to inform and obtain consent. You can read more about what this means on the website of the Norwegian Center for Research Data, NSD.
You have the opportunity to hand in your data to NTNU University Library, Dora Library.

Supervision

Allocation of a supervisor

Allocation of a supervisor

As a master's student at NTNU, you will be assigned a supervisor within the subject area pertaining to your master's thesis.
As part of the supervision is intended as a support and follow-up in the work on the master's thesis.

You can find the number of supervision hours for master theses at the Faculty of Humanities in the master's agreement.

Use your supervision time as best as possible

Use your supervision time as best as possible

Think about how you want to use of the supervision time you are entitled to, which should also include time spent for writing and answering emails both for you and your supervisor. While supervision on the Master thesis is provided throughout the academic year, it is usually more intensive in the spring semester when work on the thesis moves into the data collection, writing and finalization stages.

The main responsibility of the supervisor is to provide support and guidance. Still, you should not expect that the supervisor will always be available or able to answer emails at short notice. Hence, it is important that you manage your supervision time, also in cooperation with your supervisor. Be aware, however, that the Master Thesis is an independent research project that you develop and carry out yourself

As a result, a significantly greater independence in researching and writing your thesis is expected. You are responsible for using the available supervision time in the best possible way until the submission date.
Communicate early on with your supervisor any expectations you may have re.: the supervision process, including what working methods you prefer and what level of ambition you have for your master project.

Early in the last semester of the master's programme, you will be offered a mid-term interview with a study advisor where you can assess the progress of your thesis and discuss the way forward.
Remember you can always adjust your ambitions, wishes and needs during the process. Contact the study advisor to discuss solutions.

Change of supervisor

Change of supervisor

In rare cases, the collaboration between supervisor and master's student does not work. If serious cooperation difficulties with your supervisor should arise, you can ask to change supervisor. Contact the study supervisor in charge of your study subject.

The MA thesis grade you obtain after the oral examination is final. If you fail, separate rules apply for re-submission (see below).

Remember that you must always register for assessment in the master's thesis in the current semester you are to submit. The deadlines are by 1st of February for the spring semester and 1st of September for the autumn semester.
