NTNU 2035 - Strategy

NTNU 2035 is the main strategy for the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, with campuses located in Trondheim, Gjøvik and Ålesund. The strategy will guide the further development of NTNU while preserving our distinctive character and integrity as an academic institution.

The strategy is based on NTNU’s unique characteristics. We are a comprehensive university with a main profile in science and technology, and with a strong focus on professional studies. NTNU’s unique profile is reflected in our social mission, where interdisciplinarity is an important strength. NTNU’s core tasks are education, research, artistic development, innovation and dissemination.

‘Knowledge for a better world’ is our vision. This, along with our four core values creative, constructive, critical and respectful form an important part of the university’s identity.

NTNU is a university with high ambitions. The strategy sets out three overarching ambitions that will guide development and priorities throughout the strategic period. The three ambitions emphasise different dimensions in NTNU’s vision. The strategy further promotes four prerequisites that must be met to realise these ambitions.

NTNU 2035 is the university’s main strategy. The faculties, the University Museum, the departments and the campuses in Gjøvik and Ålesund will develop their own strategies that operationalise the main strategy. The main strategy covers a tenyear period and shall be revised no later than after six years.

Premises

Premises – prerequisites for success

Academic freedom, a good learning and working environment, excellent infrastructure and a competent organisation and leadership are particularly important prerequisites for achieving our ambitions.

Academic freedom

NTNU will work to safeguard academic freedom, as defined in the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges, as a fundamental prerequisite for our academic activities. We will protect our independence both at the institutional level and in relation to our academic staff. We will support our employees’ opportunities to participate in public debate with research-based knowledge. Academic freedom also means that we work in accordance with recognised standards of integrity and quality within our fields, and that we have a responsibility to help ensure that other academic communities adhere to the same standards.

Learning and working environment

All students and employees at NTNU are expected to contribute to a good learning and working environment, and leaders/managers have a special responsibility. NTNU wants to provide an inclusive and safe environment that promotes well-being, health and development. A strong safety culture is a key element of a sound learning and working environment. It is important that the learning environment provides a foundation for identity formation, inclusion and a sense of belonging. Our students shall experience strong academic and social frameworks, and that efforts are made to facilitate a well-functioning Student Democracy. As an employer, NTNU ensures predictable and attractive working conditions.

Infrastructure

Our infrastructure, including learning spaces, physical and digital laboratories, and collections, is an important advantage. Adapted and inviting physical environments promote groundbreaking research and effective learning and working processes. They also create arenas for academic and social interaction between students, employees and the surrounding community. NTNU must draw on experiences from major campus development projects and incorporate them into the development of the entire university. The infrastructure shall be environmentally, technically and economically sustainable, as well as modern and functional in relation to our core activities. Long-term financing, well-structured processes and competent technical staff are prerequisites for safeguarding health, environment and safety considerations, as well as the responsible operation, maintenance and upgrading of the infrastructure.

Organisation and management

NTNU is built on a culture characterised by engaged employees and students, participation and strong leadership. Competent leaders at all levels of the organisation are ensured through leadership development and sound leadership support. Transparency, co-determination and collaboration with employee, student and safety representatives are key to decision-making processes at NTNU. Through sound financial management, predictable framework conditions and a well-adapted administration, a solid foundation is created for the activities of each unit. We will develop as a competent organisation with user-friendly and efficient support systems tailored to the needs of employees, students and society’s expectations. The diversity of employees and students requires linguistic awareness throughout the organisation. Close collaboration lays the foundation for the development of new knowledge. When we collaborate across the entire university, we create understanding and engagement that strengthen our ability to be innovative and develop effective solutions. NTNU will strengthen collaboration across academic communities and organisational units and reduce financial and administrative barriers to cooperation.
