UNET project at

Makerere University (MAK)

We work with establishing PhD programmes and training facilities at the Makerere University in Uganda.

PhD programmes relevant for UNET

The PhD programmes at UMAK are mainly research-based. The PhD students tend to need more than the required time (3-4 years) to finalize their degree, as an array of challenges exists related to supervision/mentorship capacity, academic literacy and writing skills, research and research methodology. A transition towards taught PhD programmes by specific departments/programmes is being implemented and the UNET project will provide support to this. The expected result is improved completion rates and quality of research.

Training Node at Makerere on Solar Energy and Bioenergy

The solar energy research at Makerere is mainly focussed on Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system and solar resource measurement. The research is based on both experimental work and computational studies. It is envisaged that through UNET, lab facilities to support, improve and expand the training in TES will be set. The current trend, which will be supported in a UNET Training Node is hybrid systems, where also electrical sources are used for charging high temperature TES for cooking.
