SAIL: Sustainable Architecture & Intelligent Learning

SAIL (Sustainable Architecture & Intelligent Learning) is an educational innovation initiative that explores how artificial intelligence can enhance learning, critical thinking, and sustainability competence in architectural education. The project integrates AI tools systematically into the MSc in Sustainable Architecture (MSSUSARC), and - through shared courses and learning arenas - also supports learning in the 5‑year Master of Architecture (MAAR).

SAIL builds on the program’s strong foundation in digital and science‑based design, expanding this with responsible use of AI for performance evaluation, variant generation, academic writing, and design exploration. The project is developed by an interdisciplinary team with expertise across architecture, engineering, pedagogy, ethics, digitalisation, and AI.

Purpose & Approach

SAIL aims to give students and teachers the competence needed to use AI critically, creatively, and responsibly, with a strong emphasis on environmental awareness and sustainability. The initiative develops:

  • Competence building for teachers and students on ethical and responsible AI use.
  • AI‑enhanced design and analysis tools, including LCA, energy modelling, climate adaptation, and generative design.
  • Workshops and learning modules integrated into MSSUSARC and into shared MAAR courses.
  • Experimental arenas where students test emerging AI tools and discuss their impact on architectural design.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration with experts from computer science, education, engineering, and digital construction.

Through these components, SAIL strengthens both the digital and the conceptual toolbox of future sustainable architecture professionals.
