Climate Positive Buildings and Neighbourhoods Lab

Climate Positive Buildings and Neighbourhoods Lab

The Climate Positive Buildings and Neighbourhoods Lab at NTNU works to transform the built environment in response to the urgent global challenge of climate change. Our solutions for buildings and urban areas go beyond net‑zero, aiming to actively generate positive impacts for both the climate and the environment.

Through an interdisciplinary approach, we integrate cutting‑edge research, technological innovation, and real‑world application to develop resilient, resource‑efficient, and human‑centric living spaces. Collaboration is fundamental to our mission, and we work closely with public and private partners, industry stakeholders, municipalities, and leading research institutes nationally and internationally.

Equally important is our commitment to educating future professionals and advancing the skills needed for a climate‑positive transition. We also prioritise broad dissemination and outreach, ensuring that research insights are shared and contribute to societal awareness, policy development, and sustainable innovation.

Key Pillars

  • Zero Emission Buildings: Leading research and development for buildings with minimal environmental impact across their lifecycle.
  • Sustainable Neighbourhoods: Designing and implementing urban solutions that foster energy security and community well-being.
  • Advanced Building Technologies: Pioneering innovative materials, building energy systems, and digital tools for smarter, greener construction.
  • Research & Education: Cultivating the next generation of experts through research-led teaching and hands-on learning experiences.

Why Our Work Matters

The built environment accounts for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. At our lab, we are committed to reversing this trend. By focusing on climate-positive solutions, we not only reduce environmental impact but also enhance quality of life, contribute to energy security, and foster innovation for a greener future. Our work directly supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals for affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities, and climate action.
