Jan-Otmar Hesse is professor of Economic and Social History at the University of Bayreuth since 2015. Before, he held positions University of Bielefeld, Göttingen and Frankfurt.

My current research interest is dedicated to Germany's foreign economic relations after 1945. In particular I am exploring the strong political and social orientation in export surplusses of the German economy. I have written books on the German postal service in the 19th century (2002); on the history of German economics after 1945 (2010) as well as an introduction to economic history (2019) and an introduction to the history of the Great Depression (2014).

Jan-Otmar Hesse's profile at the University of Bayreuth

University of Bayreuth

The University of Bayreuth is a very strong research institution with a “centre of excellence” in African studies and a very successful BA-programme in Philosophy & Economics. It is the strategy of our university to specialise in interdisciplinary academic niches. In this context a research and educational unit in economic history was established in 2015, with the MA programme "History and Economics" a year later. The university lives the advantages of cross-disciplinary collaboration and inspiration, also in the connection between Science and Humanities. Besides the specialization in African Studies, MA programmes in "Global Change Ecology" and "Global Food, Nutrition and Health" are prominent projects.
