Main ideas behind the EMERALD project

There are two main components to the project. First, we will use the project to develop an application for an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Program on natural resource management and economic development. Second, we will develop teaching cases which will be made available open access for use by higher educational institutions across the European and international community.

The first component, the application for an international study program, is the starting point of the project. The European Union, through the Erasmus Mundus-program, supports the creation of new international joint master’s programs. These programs generally attract highly qualified and motivated students from all over the world. The basic idea is to try to set up a master’s program on management and governance of natural resources. The aim is to provide the students with knowledge and understanding of the long-term political and economic aspects of natural resource governance and management and make them attractive for both the private and the public sector. To do this, the project will identify labour market demands through contact with industries, public institutions and NGOs. The draft application will also be discussed with stakeholders.

The second component is concerned with developing and testing out a case-based pedagogy for potential use in the study program. This will consist of the production of a number of teaching cases, and workshops where the methodology is taught and tested out.
