Call for participants

We are happy to announce the 1^st Excited Summer School on Research in Computing Education, which will take place on June 17-21 2019 in Trondheim, Norway. The school offers an arena for developing knowledge and skills in the area of computing education research, giving participants the opportunity to take part in learning sessions with international experts in the field, engage in discussions, and get hands-on experience with state-of-the-art tools and methods. The participants will also present and discuss their work, getting feedback from experts and peers. 

The topics include an overview of Computing Education as a research field with its history and politics. Computing Education research topics will cover the individual level (e.g. adaptive learning tools; identity and employability), group level (e.g. student project teams – learning and assessment) and research on a larger scale (e.g. international Computing Education studies and learning analytics based on log data). The programme will include a variety of examples of good research practice, providing a broad coverage of the challenges and potential of Computing Education research.

Learning outcome

Students are expected to gain knowledge, competencies and skills needed to participate and set up research in the area of Computing Education.
Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of research in computing education. Students are expected to gain advanced knowledge about the state of the art in computing education, including research and practice, in terms of theories, methods, and technology. 
Skills: Ability to apply the acquired knowledge as part of the student's PhD program. 
General competence: Ability to reflect over the subject in relation to the student's PhD work and in a broader social context. 

We welcome PhD students, postdocs and young researchers from all countries to apply! 

ECTS credits at PhD level

For participants who are interested and fulfilling formal formal requirements, it will be possible to acquire 7.5 ECTS credits at PhD level. This will entail some additional coursework inlcuding an oral exam. Taking the exam will not require you to stay in Norway beyond the one-week duration of the school. If this is of interest to you, you register this on the aplication form, and we will guide you through the prosess of registering as an external candidate at NTNU. You will need to document your master degree, and if you are accepted to an PhD program.

About the organizers

Excited is the Centre of Excellence in IT Education at NTNU and Nord University. Our vision is to put Norway in the forefront of innovative IT education and make IT an increasingly more attractive study choice for young people. To achieve this, we address the entire IT education pipeline, i.e. diverse recruitment into IT study programs, the learning taking place during the program (with particular focus on student engagement and identity, learning through construction, cross-campus collaboration, and industry-university collaboration), and the resulting career-readiness and employability with which the candidates enter work life and their role in society as IT professionals.

Venue

The summer school will be located in Trondheim at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) campus.

Trondheim is known as the technology capital of Norway, and in June, we have daylight from 3 AM to 11.30 PM. With its 180 000 inhabitants Trondheim is the third largest city in Norway. It is home to more than 30 000 students attending the university or one of the university colleges. They make Trondheim a vibrant and youthful city.

Fees

The fee is set at 300 Euro excluding accomodation. The fee includes lunch and refreshments every day, and activities every night and dinner Tuesday and Thursday.

Application

We require

• a short CV (1 page)
• Brief statement including research topic, research approach and motivation to participate at the summer school (maximum 2 pages)
• For PhD students, we require a letter of support from you PhD advisor

If you want to register for the PhD course credits, you note this in your aplication form, and we will guide you through the application process at NTNU.

Travel and accommodation

Travel

The local airport is Trondheim Airport Værnes, and there is a bus service with frequent departures to the city centre that takes approximately 30 minutes.

Accomodation

The participants are responsible for booking of accomomodation . We have reserved rooms at two venues in Trondheim at good rates.

One is Quality Hotel Augustin , less than a 10 minute walk from the venue. We have reserved single rooms at the prize of 994 NOK per night. Please contact the hotell by email or phone, and provide the group reservation code 1017GR002490 (Please note that this is a cash free hotel, so you can only pay by card.) 

The budget alternative is Trondheim Vandrerhjem. This is a 30 minuit walk, but it is easily accessible by bus from the venue. We have reserved some single- and double rooms, and the prizes are 495 NOK for single room, 640 NOK for a double room, and there are possibilities to sleep in a dorm for 335 NOK per night. The inn was rebuilt in 2013, and has a high standard with Wifi included. Note that these rooms are reserved only until 15. april.
