Establishment

The network Music Pedagogy in Development (MiU) evolved through collaboration between diverse research institutions in Norway from 2018–2022, and was formalized through the general assembly at the first conference of the network (MiU22, Nord University, 26.10.22).

Purpose

The purpose of the network is to promote music pedagogical research in Norway by:

  1. initiate and coordinate research and development in the field of formal and informal music education
  2. communicate and highlight music pedagogy research and development between researchers, and between researchers and diverse fields of practice
  3. building networks and communities of interest in relevant existing research environments, and between research environments and practice fields in schools, kindergartens, music and arts schools, community music and vocational fields of professional musicians
  4. contribute to develop research education/research schools related to the field of the field

Participants

  1. institutions/ departments in higher education that offer research training at minimum master's level in music pedagogy or in subjects with relevance to this field
  2. individual members: researchers who are not affiliated with an institution but have research expertise from master-level and up, relevant to music pedagogy
  3. councils and organizations related to music education and music-related work

Membership

The member institutions commit to contribute to operate the network. The contribution can be of different nature and scope, such as representing in the board, or hosting a network conference. Institutions that would like to become members or researches that would like to become individual members, can all apply for membership by emailing the head of the network.

Activites

  1. The network will, in collaboration with one of the member institutions, organize a conference each year. A conference committee consisting of at least one of the steering group's members and representatives from the organizing institution is established for each upcoming conference. Symposia, workshops or smaller conferences related to specific themes can also be arranged between the conferences.
  2. After each conference, paper presenters are invited to submit articles to a multimodal and peer-reviewed journal or anthology. Editors for this publication will mainly consist of members of the conference committee, and a presentation of/invitation to this will be given at the conference.
  3. The network has its own mailing list. Anyone who wishes can be on this list and receive emails by entering their email address here. This mailing list can only be used by the network manager. The network also has a Facebook page that everyone is encouraged to use to share news and current affairs.

Structure

The network is led by the MiU steering group, consisting of one representative from each member institution (cf. section 3a). This steering group will be assembled in a way that as good as possible reflects diversity, for example related to subjects, traditions and gender. The steering group must ensure both continuity and variation, and the representatives are therefore elected on an annual basis for 4 years, with shifts that ensure that not all representatives are replaced at the same time. A new steering group, consisting of both new and experienced representatives, is elected at each general meeting. The stearing group constitutes itself, and elects a leader. The leader can also set up a working committee consisting of up to 6 people with the greatest possible professional and geographical breadth to assist, give advice and carry out tasks between the conferences.

An open general assembly is organized at each conference. Everyone who is qualified as a member through being a researcher with a master's degree or more has the right to speak and vote.

Leader of the network, leader of each conference and the steering group will work together to decide theme, organize invitations, program etc.

These statutes can only be changed at the network's open board meeting, with a 2/3 majority.
