Inter-substation communication solutions (PhD – NTNU Dr. David Palma)

This work package will address inter-substation communication solutions based on existing infrastructure technology and standards. In addition to this, it will explore the 5th generation (5G) of mobile wireless networks, taking into account the requirements of state-of-the-art protocols such as IEC61850. Aligned with 5G, Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications (URLLC) should be assessed as a possible solution for meeting the requirements of power system protection, which differ from other smartgrid technologies. In addition, 5G’s support of different networking slices and multi Radio Access Technologies (multi-RATs) will be studied as enablers of a better usage of infrastructures resources while simultaneously complementing the existing network solutions. In this WP topics of interest are:

  • Latency and time synchronization, robustness and reliability, scalability and cost efficiency
  • Service level agreement (SLA) monitoring and assurance
  • Mitigation of communication loss
  • Authentication and integrity (cyber security)
  • Analysis of state-of-the-art protocols (e.g. IEC 61850, IEEE1588)
  • 1 PhD
