DiverSEA

The ocean plays a critical role in human well-being. Nearly half of the EU population lives near the coast, relying on its resources and ecosystem services. These services include food security, clean water, energy production, and climate change mitigation. However, these ecosystems are under increasing pressure. Marine biodiversity, the variety of life in the ocean, has declined dramatically in recent decades. This decline threatens the very resources and services we depend on.

Traditional Approaches Have Limitations

Many current research efforts focus on specific areas of expertise, problems, or ecosystems. While valuable, this approach can lead to solutions limited by the scope of the study. What's needed is a broader approach that integrates data and expertise across disciplines.

DiverSEA: A New Approach to Marine Observation

DiverSEA is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to revolutionize marine observation and monitoring. It brings together cutting-edge technologies and expertise from various fields to create a comprehensive picture of ocean health.

Here are some of DiverSEA's key components:

  • Advanced Molecular Monitoring: This involves using environmental DNA (eDNA) and RNA (eRNA) to detect and quantify marine organisms.
  • Integration with New Technologies: DiverSEA combines eDNA sampling with autonomous vehicles and other cutting-edge tools for data collection.
  • Real-World Case Studies: The project will conduct case studies that combine various approaches, including citizen science, existing monitoring programs, and satellite data.
  • Data Powerhouse: A powerful AI and machine learning architecture that will integrate, analyze, and interpret data from diverse sources.
  • Interactive Communication Platform: The "Biodiversity Services Dashboard" will translate complex scientific findings into clear, actionable information for policymakers, stakeholders, and the public.

By combining these elements, DiverSEA aims to provide a new level of understanding of marine biodiversity and the services it offers. This knowledge can empower policymakers, businesses, and the public to make informed decisions about ocean conservation and sustainable use.
