About

Research:          DNA-methylome dynamics in cognition and brain diseases

The dynamics of DNA methylation landscapes (the DNA methylome) is one of the important epigenetic mechanisms regulating the neural basis of cognition and the progression of brain diseases. It is achieved through a cyclic enzymatic cascade comprised of (i) methylation of cytosines (mC) by DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs), (ii) iterative oxidation of the methyl group to hydroxymethyl cytosine (hmC), formylcytosine (fC), and carboxylcytosine (caC) by TET dioxygenases, and (iii) restoration of unmodified cytosines by DNA glycosylase-initiated base excision repair (BER). Our research focus is to decipher the distinct patterns of DNA methylation and mC derivatives underlying the cognitive brain function (e.g., learning and memory) and the development of brain cancer (e.g., glioblastoma).

We offer interdisciplinary research projects, involving transgenic mouse models, rAAV viral tools, diverse molecular techniques, cutting-edge single-cell transcriptome and epigenome sequencing technologies, functional neural anatomy, neurophysiological and animal behavioral studies, as well as 2D/3D human disease models of brain tumors. Distinct tasks and objectives will be assigned based on the student’s interests and backgrounds.
