Course content

The aim is to discuss and seek answers to questions often raised about mathematics, such as: What is mathematics - really? Is mathematics needed in era of the modern computers? How can mathematics be applied? Are there "eternal mathematical truths", or is mathematics a science based on experience? In addition, there will be excursions into medicine, economy and technology. Other examples are chosen from our daily life experiences, with glimpses from the history of mathematics.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the student should have an insight into the role of mathematics in our society and the nature of mathematics.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and projects. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the final grade. This portfolio comprises a written final examination (75%) and project assignment (25%). The results for the constituent parts are given in %- points, while the final course grade for the whole portifolio is given by the letter grading system.
Retake of examination may be given as an oral examination.
