Course content
The theoretical basis for acoustic calculations. The following will be covered in detail: simple vibrating systems, vibrations of strings and thin plates, the acoustic wave equation, and solutions to this. Reflection, transmission, and radiation of acoustic waves. Sound in enclosed spaces such as rooms and duct systems, acoustic filters. Introduction to room and building acoustics. Introduction to the use of numerical methods for calculating acoustic fields.
Learning outcome
The course shall give an introduction to basic acoustic theory and the theory's application to practical situations.
Knowledge:
(1) To know the theoretical basis for generation, propagation, and damping of sound waves and mechanical vibrations.
(2) Know how to adjust general acoustic theory to common practical applications.
Skills:
(1) To be able to specify and analyze mechanical systems like mass/spring combinations, vibrating strings, and vibrating plates.
(2) To know and assess simple methods for practical control of the acoustics in rooms and canal systems.
(3) To determine sound reflection and transmission through multi layered structures.
(4) To assess strategies against unwanted sound.
General competence:
The course gives experience in the use of theoretical/mathematical knowledge to solve practical engineering tasks.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, non-compulsory exercises, compulsory exercise. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.

Recommended previous knowledge
Knowledge in mathematics and physics corresponding to 1st and 2nd year of the study program for electronics. Necessary basic acoustic theory will be given during the course.
Course materials
Kinsler, Frey, Coppens and Sanders: Fundamentals of Acoustics. Other course material will be given at the start of the course.
