Strategy

NTNU is an internationally oriented university with campuses in Trondheim, Gjøvik and Ålesund.

Despite its main profile in science and technology, NTNU offers a broad range of academic disciplines, with a focus on programmes of professional study. Our core tasks as a university are education, research, innovation and communication.

The academic profile of NTNU in Ålesund focuses on oceans, health, technology and international business. We are a compact, dynamic campus where the various academic environments collaborate closely with each other and with partners from society and industry. Situated in a region with a strong culture of innovation, development-oriented public-sector players and companies that compete globally, we are in a unique position to conduct education, research and innovation that can create international value.

The campus strategy for NTNU in Ålesund is based on NTNU’s main strategy and must also be seen in the context of the faculty and departmental strategies. The purpose of the campus strategy is to function as an overarching management and development tool for NTNU in Ålesund, and it aims to contribute to the University achieving the three ambitions defined in the main strategy:

  1. NTNU is a leading international university.
  2. NTNU is a driving force for knowledge-based and sustainable social development.
  3. NTNU is an attractive academic community.

NTNU in Ålesund is an academic beacon

We will have academic environments and programmes of study that are nationally and internationally leading in the areas of oceans, health, technology and international business. Building on our proximity to public services and a business community that competes globally, we will foster research, education and innovation that contribute to value creation and sustainability.

We will achieve this by:

  • Facilitating the establishment and further development of outstanding academic environments with a particular focus on interdisciplinarity.
  • Strengthening the campus as a regional hub for NTNU’s combined expertise and connecting academic environments from across NTNU with key players in the region.
  • Offering attractive and socially relevant programmes of study that provide our students with high academic competence and training them in interdisciplinary problem solving and practical application of knowledge.
  • Being open to trying out new solutions and working methods regionally, which may have transfer value to the whole of NTNU and to trade and industry nationally and internationally.
  • Participating in regional, national and international educational, innovation and research partnerships.
  • Contributing to lifelong learning in the region by offering relevant and flexible courses and subjects from academic environments from other parts of NTNU.

NTNU in Ålesund is a driving force for innovation and social development

NTNU will continue to develop and strengthen its collaboration with the world of work, thereby contributing to innovation in the private, public and voluntary sectors, and to educating graduates who meet society’s needs for skills and expertise.

We will achieve this by:

  • Educating graduates who can solve complex problems and contribute to knowledge-based and sustainable social development regionally, nationally and internationally.
  • Developing knowledge, technology and solutions that align with society’s needs, boost the competitiveness of businesses in the region, and strengthen Norway’s overall preparedness.
  • Stimulating innovation and entrepreneurship in all the academic environments at NTNU in Ålesund.
  • Contributing to strengthening and developing public services through professional and academic collaboration with municipal authorities, county authorities, health authorities and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Identifying societal challenges in the region and taking the initiative to resolve them through broad interdisciplinary collaborations with regional stakeholders and with academic environments from across the whole of NTNU.
  • Further developing and creating new meeting places for students, researchers and partners across traditional divides between disciplines.
  • Collaborating with other educational institutions on campus and in the region.
  • Being a recognised, active contributor to regional society, a committed disseminator of knowledge, and a driving force for the use of research-based knowledge.
