About
I am an Associate Professor of Children's Literature and Young Learners in the Section for English and Foreigh Languages in NTNU's Department of Teacher Education.
My research interests are primarily related to children's engagements with popular and literary texts, both inside and outside the classroom. I work closely with children's film and television, and I have a particular interest in the use of compelling literature in the English language classroom.
After taking an undergraduate education in childhood and special education in New York State, I taught at the early childhood and primary school levels before and during my work on an MA in English. My 4-year PhD program at The Ohio State University in Teaching and Learning- Literature for Children and Young Adults ended with dissertation research conducted over the course of a year in Oslo, Norway.
I bring a strong foundation in pedagogy and student-centered practice to my teaching and research, grounding all of my research in a framework that emphasizes children's experiences with stories.
A current project of which I am especially proud is eBLINK, a digital English children's book library funded by grants and awards here at NTNU that is already in use in primary school and university classrooms. My ambitions are to support future and in-service teachers of English as they re-imagine the teaching of English as an additional language in an era marked by large-scale engagement with English-language media by children of all ages.
