Amanda Nicole Fayant

About

I am a PhD candidate in Education and Lifelong Learning at NTNU, and a Métis/Cree/Saulteaux/French artist and scholar originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, located on Treaty 4 territory, where I situate myself in relation to my research, writing, and art.

I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Production with minors in Film Studies and Philosophy, as well as a Master’s of Philosophy in Indigenous Studies. I have teaching experience in higher education within digital culture, media literacy, youth media practices, and Indigenous studies, and I am committed to inclusive and student‑engaged learning environments. My work is interdisciplinary and grounded in Indigenous methodologies and feminist perspectives.

Jeg er ph.d.-kandidat i pedagogikk ved NTNU, og en Métis/Cree/Saulteaux/fransk kunstner og forsker med bakgrunn fra Regina i Saskatchewan, på Treaty 4-territorium, der jeg plasserer meg i relasjon til forskningen, skrivingen og den kunstneriske praksisen min.

Jeg har bachelorgrad i filmproduksjon (Bachelor of Fine Arts) med fordypninger i filmstudier og filosofi, samt en Master of Philosophy (MPhil) i urfolksstudier. Jeg har undervisningserfaring fra høyere utdanning innen digital kultur, mediekompetanse, unges mediepraksiser og urfolksstudier, og jeg er opptatt av inkluderende og studentaktive læringsmiljøer. Arbeidet mitt er tverrfaglig og knyttet til urfolksmetodologier og feministiske perspektiver.

Research

My research explores how young people engage with digital visual culture—especially memes and short-form video—as everyday sites of meaning-making, interpretation, and social belonging. I am particularly interested in how shared references circulate in peer cultures and how young people collaboratively negotiate what content “means” in specific contexts. Drawing on perspectives from visual literacy, I treat digital visual media as social practice rather than isolated texts, focusing on how meanings are produced through participation, talk, and interaction.

My doctoral project examines how boundary-laden references, including violence, become recognizable, discussable, and negotiable in youth media practices, and how participants manage questions of acceptability as they interpret and respond to circulating content.
