About

CV

Ana Širović is a marine bioacoustician, interested in development and use of new methods to improve understanding of highly exploited and endangered marine species. She is interested in noise and the effects of anthropogenic noise on marine life. Her group uses acoustic tools to answer ecological, population-level questions relevant to the management of animal resources.

Prior to joining NTNU, Ana was a faculty member at Texas A&M University at Galveston and Alaska Pacific University and a research oceanographer at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She is the recipient of the Medwin prize from the Acoustical Society of America and the US Antarctic Service Medal.

Competencies

  • Bioacoustics
  • Ecology
  • Marine Ecology
  • Marine biology
  • Oceanography
  • Soundscapes

Research

My research interests revolve around three main themes:

  1. the use of acoustics to study whale and fish populations, especially endangred or commercially important species
  2. understanding long term trends in ocean ambient sounds
  3. impacts of sound on marine life and ecosystems

The support for research on these topics for my group has been provided over the years by a variety of sources, including US National Science Foundation, US Office of Naval Research, US Navy's Living Marine Resources Program, Benioff Ocean Initiative, Flora Family Foundation, California Sea Grant, and most recently The Research Council of Norway under the JPI Oceans program.

ACCURATE

When using a cue counting approach to density estimation one needs to convert an estimated density of cues (e.g. animal calls) into a density of animals. Within the project, we are exploring factors that determine baleen whale cue rate variability.

Pure Wind

Sounds from offshore wind farms (OWF) are a substantial contributor of anthropogenic noise in the marine environment. Under this consortium, we aim to improve our understanding of the impacts of noise from operational phase of OWF on marine ecosystems.

PRECISE

We are enhancing out understanding of the occurrence and distribution of endangered and sensitive cetaceans in southern California Bight by coupling passive and active acoustics to study the dynamics of cetaceans and their prey.

WhaleSafe

Whale Safe is a technology-based mapping and analysis tool displaying whale and ship data—designed to prevent fatal ship collisions with whales, currently implemented along the west coast of the United States. We contribute to its acoustics tools.
