In addition, in 2015-2021, Karlsen held lectures by invitation on various topics such as project management, Lean and IT-enabled change in the course IF300114 Systems Engineering coordinated by Assoc. Professor Max Ingar Mørk. In the spring semester of 2024, she was the local NTNU campus Ålesund contact/lab supervisor for the course INGA2300 Engineering Systems Thinking.
- Both as study program coordinator, vice dean, deputy head, department head, researcher and lecturer Karlsen has been actively involved in improving the educational quality at the departments at which she has worked. In 2016 she was member of the ExcITEd (Centre for Excellent IT Education) application, awarded «National Center of Excellence». The centre, aiming at putting Norway in the forefront of innovative IT education and to make IT an increasingly more attractive study choice for young people, was funded with 37000000 NOK by NOKUT. Until 2020 Karlsen was member of the ExcITEd management team. In the news: https://www.universitetsavisa.no/nyheter/ntnu-far-to-sentre-for-fremragende-utdanning/157102
- To improve educational quality, Karlsen has extensively made use of action research to collect information about teaching, curriculum development and behavior in the classroom. Among others she has investigated the use of digital art application development as an example of entertainment computing for increasing motivation and participation in a computer engineering undergraduate systems development course together with Professor Robin T. Bye. She has also been workshop organizer of Let the kids code both in 2014 and 2015 in collaboration with colleagues. In 2014, as an example, 360 pupils from Ålesund and Ørskog conducted an hour of coding at Aalesund University College.
