Athanasios Xanthoulis
About
Athanasios (Thanos) Xanthoulis is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and a Consultant in General and Gastrointestinal Surgery at Levanger Hospital.
His clinical practice is within gastrointestinal surgery, mainly coloproctology, with a particular focus on proctology and a long-standing interest in the treatment of pilonidal disease.
Xanthoulis completed his medical degree at Charles University in Prague, Czechia, and holds a PhD in medicine from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. His doctoral research focused on the expression of E2F transcription factors in colorectal cancer. He has held his position as Associate Professor at NTNU since 2018, alongside full-time clinical practice.
At NTNU, he is actively involved in undergraduate (NTNU LINK Levanger) and postgraduate medical education, clinical supervision, and the mentoring of medical students and doctoral candidates. His teaching covers gastrointestinal surgery broadly, with emphasis on clinical reasoning, decision-making, and the integration of theory into clinical practice.
In parallel with his clinical and educational work, Xanthoulis leads research and innovation projects within medical extended reality. His current research activities focus on the use of virtual reality for simulation and interprofessional trauma team training (VirTTS). He also has a broader academic interest in immersive technologies for medical education and their potential role in patient education and therapeutic interventions.
