About

Bjørnar Grenne, MD, PhD, FESC, FEACVI is an Associate Professor at the Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging (ISB), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, NTNU, and a consultant cardiologist at the Department of Cardiology, St. Olavs Hospital. He leads research and innovation in advanced echocardiography and AI, aiming for higher quality, more predictable workflows, and patient-centred diagnostics.

Research and innovation. Grenne’s research comprises development, validation, and clinical implementation of AI-based methods for echocardiography, including automated measurements (strain/myocardial deformation) and decision support, with a focus on quality, reproducibility, and efficient workflow. He has served as Work Package Lead in CIUS (SFI, 2020–2024) and is PI on several research and innovation projects in clinical cardiology and the implementation of new medical technologies.

Project leadership and collaboration. He establishes and leads multidisciplinary teams of clinicians, engineers, and data scientists, and collaborates widely with Norwegian university hospitals and partners in the health and technology sectors (including SINTEF, Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet and Ullevål, Sørlandet Hospital, and the University Hospital of North Norway). He applies formal project-management competence in portfolio management, risk and stakeholder management, and sustainable clinical implementation. He is the Principal Union Representative for the Norwegian Medical Association at St. Olavs Hospital and works closely with organisations and hospital leadership to promote sustainable, high-quality services.

Academic leadership and service. Grenne is Chair of the Working Group of Echocardiography of the Norwegian Society of Cardiology and a member of the EACVI National Cardiac Societies Committee. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography (JASE).

Teaching and supervision. He has extensive teaching experience at both undergraduate and specialist levels (100+ lectures) and supervises numerous PhD, research-track, and master’s students (8 completed PhDs; 7 ongoing).

Clinical expertise. As a clinician, he has broad cardiology competence with expertise in advanced echocardiography for valvular disease, coronary artery disease, and structural heart disease, as well as intraoperative and interventional echocardiography.

Background. Grenne completed his MD from NTNU (2003), completed a PhD in Clinical Medicine at the University of Oslo (2011), and is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology (2015). He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Project Management.
