Christoffer Wold Andersen
About
I am a PhD candidate in political science at NTNU, and I work on the LEGACIES project led by Professor Charles Butcher.
My PhD project connects the legacies of historical and precolonial states to variations in modern repression and coercive institutions. Using a broad definition of repression that includes coercive institutions, persistent and structural inequality, and even targeted mass killings, I contribute to the understanding of the role of institutional persistence in influencing and shaping the “bad” (coercive and repressive) institutions of modern states. The project uses data from the LEGACIES-project, and the methods of inquiry are empirical and quantitative, exploring how coercive institutions from the past connect to the present using geospatial data on the (continuous) boundaries of historical states.
