About

Christoffer Nyborg Hellstrøm is a PhD candidate at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). He holds a master’s degree in Advanced Mechanical Engineering and Robotics from Ritsumeikan University, Japan, with a research background in multiaxial fatigue behaviour of TiAl alloys.

At NTNU, Hellstrøm’s research focuses on additive manufacturing, mechanical behaviour of materials, and structural design, with particular emphasis on laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) of aluminium alloys. The aim of his PhD is to investigate a novel approach for overcoming the build-volume limitations of LPBF by manufacturing compact AlSi10Mg structures that can be post-processed, plastically deployed into larger functional configurations, and subsequently strengthened to achieve their intended structural performance. This approach is investigated through a combination of structural design, material characterization, mechanical testing, heat-treatment strategies, and the development and evaluation of proof-of-concept deployable structures.

His broader research interests include fatigue and fracture of metallic materials, mechanical testing, material characterization, and the relationship between manufacturing processes, microstructure, and mechanical performance.
