My research focuses on the integration of biodiversity considerations into long-term energy system modelling. As the energy transition accelerates, large-scale deployment of renewable energy technologies and electrification increases pressure on land use and ecosystems. At the same time, international climate goals and biodiversity protection targets must be achieved simultaneously.
Building on my previous research on biodiversity-based land constraints in the Nordic power system, I will investigate how ecological and spatial biodiversity data – or the impact on biodiversity itself – can be incorporated into energy system optimization models. The work focuses on understanding the interactions between renewable energy deployment, land use, and ecosystem protection, particularly in the context of the Nordic and European energy transition.
The overall aim is to develop modelling approaches that support climate-neutral energy systems while also accounting for biodiversity conservation and sustainable land use.
