About

CV

I stand on three professional pillars; one in academia teaching and researching in an innovative professional environment, one in practice as an architect where tectonic ideas are tested in real life, and one as a farmer where I have to relate to nature and its ecological systems to the greatest extent. This combination gives me great satisfaction and drive, in addition to giving me practical knowledge that I take with me into research. For example, this is something I apply to my work with my practice-based PhD, where I use design-driven research on regenerative building materials. With lessons learned from agriculture, I aim to develop buildings that can help rebuild, or even improve, the ecosystem they are a part of so that buildings and nature can benefit from each other.

My main subject is building tectonics and bio-based materials, and a central question of my work is how sensory and aesthetic values can contribute into a sustainable building culture. I am an optimistic idealist who hopes that I can be one of those who dare to be brave enough to stand for a change.

My work has its base in my early life, where I grew up on a farm in the Norwegian countryside. Here I learned that the land and the natural resources that made up my world are part of an intricate web that is in a state of perpetual change. Later I was graduated with a master’s in architecture from NTNU, Norway. Together with my partner Kristian Møystad Bjørnland, I developed a building system based on local resources which we used to design several buildings in a rural hamlet in Norway. For this work, our project Grendeliv were nominated for two international awards for young architects.

I established my own practice Ur Arkitekter, graduated, and started teaching at the same time, in the beginning of 2017. In 2019 I became a farmer at Endal Gård and realize more and more that I have two different specializations that benefit from each other. My work is now spread between physical work at the farm, teaching, research, and architectural practice.

Competencies

  • Architecture
  • Biobased and biodegradable materials
  • Building Tectonics
  • Cultural heritage
  • Design for Sustainability
  • Design in Context
  • Practise based research
  • Transformation

Research

I am currently working with a PhD that researches the potential of sheep wool as an architectural material – with a multisensory approach. My research is done through practice-led methods, and I would not have considered a PhD any other way.
