Jan Emblemsvåg has been professor at NTNU since 2020, but before that he has had many top management positions in the industry since 2004. The last three were SVP and Shipyard Director/SVP of Innovation and Process Improvements in Vard, SVP Ship Design & Systems in Rolls-Royce Marine and General Manager at Midsund Bruk. He has maintained an adjunct faculty position since 2006 (BI, Høyskolen in Ålesund and NTNU). He has many years of experience as a consultant, key note speaker and board member/chairman of the board. He has researched and published significantly in Life-Cycle Analyses, Life-Cycle Costing, energy, risk, Lean and other areas. He graduated with a Ph.D (1999) and a Master of Science (1995) from Georiga Institute of Technology. He is also a sivilingeniør in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering from Norges Tekniske Høyskole (1994).

Research

Given my industrial background I take a practical approach to research - knowledge has little value unless it is useful. Therefore, research projects must emanate into something useful to be valuable. Multi-disciplinary work is therefore key. My research is therefore based on multiple strands of work - an idea I picked up from Peter F. Drucker as he said that we should learn a new area every 5 years. Such an approach provides a solid basis for life-long learning, like the rings in water after a stone... The disadvantage is that we must always write articles as main author, taking the main responsibility and conduct much of the work as well. However, I believe this is the only approach to stay sharp. 

My active research areas are:

1) Product - and process development including Lean. This area of research was my main area of research for both my master- and PhD work at Georgia Institute of Technology. I have published significantly in this area and also had several top management positions in industry where this area has been directly relevant. I have also consulted on a number of occasions within this area. The first minor area of my PhD - marketing - fits as well in this area. The same can be said about my sivilingeniørgrad from Norges Tekniske Høgskole (NTH). 

2) Life-Cycle Costing and Life-Cycle Analyses. I perform research in all the three dimensions of sustainability - cost, environmental and the social dimension - although the main focus is by far on the former two. The management part of this area has been a part of my work in industry for many years. Full focus on this area now. 

3) Risk management and uncertainty analyses. This area is a natural extension of the two aforementioned areas - particularly since life-cycle analyses of all kinds are associated with uncertainties and risks. There has been extensive usage of Monte Carlo simulations and financial analyses for various companies throughout the year. This area was picked up while working at DNV where I worked as a consultant, but today it is of medium intensity in terms of research although integrated in all my research.  

4) Operations- and general management including Lean. I started this area during my years at Stokke and Fora Form, but with my natural inclination of identifying improvements led me to also contribute academically through articles by using my work as research projects and further development. Design of experiments, Taguchi methods and value engineering became interesting areas under the Lean umbrella. Many consulting assignments and board of director positions later, I still do research in this area. 

5) Project management including Lean. In 2007 I was appointed Director of Production at Ulstein Shipyard and since shipbuilding is a project-based industry, I realized that there is much room for improvements int he project-based world given my background from manufacturing. Therefore, quality management and scheduling/project planning became focal areas of research. I have also held several consulting assignments in this area as well. This area is also connected to the next area. 

6) Renewable energy including nuclear power. In 2015 as SVP of Ship Design and Systems Integrations in Rolls-Royce Marine, the issue of zero-emission shipping came up. Given my earlier work on energy, nuclear sparked an interest in me but the costs of traditional nuclear reactors were prohibitively high. Later, as I served as General Manager of Midsund Bruk, an NOV company, the design and fabrication of advanced pressure vessels was my main focus. We also did some analyses on wind power. Through these years, given my Life-Cycle Costing research for over 20 years, I realized that there is a major room for improvement. Upon learning about the Gen IV nuclear reactors, the case was clear. Nuclear is the future. I have thereafter conducted much research on wind, solar PV and nuclear power using a techno-economic approach. Finally, my second minor area of my PhD came to usefulness also - thermodynamics. Today, this area is one of the areas I focus the most on simply due to the fact that there are many interesting challenges. 

NuProShip I / II

The project researches how future nuclear propulsion systems for ships can work including their legal framework and insurance. The objective is to have 2-3 prototype ships in commercial operation by 2035. Se the appended link to a film.

Life-Cycle Costing: Using Activity-Based Costing and Monte Carlo Methods to Manage Future Costs and Risks

This book is about Activity-Based Life-Cycle Costing (LCC), which is a more managerial type of LCC than the traditional LCC used in engineering and power systems (LCOE).

This book uses the insights from the Industrial Revolution to the present to aligning economic interests with sustainable development considerations to instigate a new industrial revolution that does not destroy the environment.
