John David Crosby
About
My doctoral research focuses on Nynorsk Neo-Romantic poetry between 1915-1930. My project is two-fold; first, I examine how the poetic motif heimen (the home) has been used since the 18th century in Norwegian poetry, and how it becomes an ideological, sociological and national utopic symbol, while, secondly, I focus on how this motif becomes problematized and deconstructed in the poetry of Kristofer Uppdal and Henrik Rytter.
This project is a part of the NTNU and NFR research project ImagiNation. Mapping the Imagined Geographies of Norwegian Literature from 1814 to 1905.
This project is advised by Anders Skare Malvik (NTNU), Eirik Vassenden (Universitetet i Bergen) and Ronny Grønning Spaans (Universitetet i Oslo).
My research interests primarily relate to Norwegian literature from the middle of the 19th century to the inter-war period in the 20th, especially the works of Henrik Ibsen, Arne Garborg and Henrik Rytter. I am most interested in aspects related to literary theory and literature history. Other academic interests/past work includes: critical theory, translation theory, 20th century French philosophy, Walter Benjamin, Martin Heidegger, Theodor Adorno, aesthetics, Scandinavian drama, and German Romanticism.
