About

My PhD project concerns the ongoing crisis surrounding the use of large language models (ChatGPT, Copilot, etc.) in higher education. I engage in dialogue with students, teaching staff, and administrative employees who navigate unclear boundaries for AI-use in a tension between disciplinary formation ("fagdannelse") and instrumentalism. The preliminary title of the project is “The Automation of Learning in Higher Education.” This ethnographic work is based on participant observation and interviews with students and staff at NTNU in Trondheim.

Bildung ("dannelse") has long been central to the idea of the university, is the use of language models about to change this?

In the project, I take the “AI crisis” at the university as a point of departure to examine the strategies students use to pass courses and complete their educational trajectories. Examples include koking, strategic continuation-exams ("konteeksamen"), and of course the use of language models. There are significant differences in how students, teaching staff, and administrative employees think about language models, cheating, education, and knowledge. Despite differing perceptions and unclear guidelines, many students choose to explore the emerging grey zones of academic writing.
