Michael J. Geary, FRHistS, is Professor of Modern European History and Jean Monnet Chair in History of European Integration in the Department of Historical and Classical Studies at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He holds a Ph.D. in European History from the European University Institute in Florence, Italy and is a First Class Honours graduate of the National University of Ireland. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Concurrently, he is also a Global Fellow with the Global Europe Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., one of the world’s leading non-partisan think tanks.

Inter alia, he has held a number of distinguished fellowships including: Global Europe Fellow at the Wilson Center, Fulbright-Schuman Professor at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., European Parliament-Geremek Research Fellow at the College of Europe in Warsaw, Poland, and Visiting Research Fellow, Institute for European Global Studies, University of Basel, Switzerland.

Prior to joining the faculty at NTNU in 2018, Prof Geary was Director of Studies of the MA in European Studies at Maastricht University in the Netherlands where he was a tenured Assistant Professor in modern European history.

A native of Cork in Ireland, Prof Geary is the author of two books and numerous articles on contemporary Europe, Irish diplomatic history, Britain's European policy, supranational history of the European Union, EU enlargement and European-United States relations.

  • A history of Ireland's foreign policy and European Political Cooperation during the 1970s and 1980s.
  • A history of the European Commission's DG for External Relations/Enlargement Policy from the 1960s to the 1990s (in cooperation with Università degli Studi di Padova).

SUPERVISION OF RESEARCH:

Prof Geary supervises theses at all levels in Modern and Contemporary History and European Studies and welcomes inquiries from prospective students.

Current Ph.D. supervision (main supervisor): Elisabeth Skaar - The Great Balancing Act: Britain, South Africa and the Namibia Question, 1974-90.
