TMR18: Cyber-physical testing in Marine Technology (5th year, MSc)

Research interests

Hydrodynamics and dynamic behaviour of offshore structures. Nonlinear hydrodynamic loads. Mooring systems. Lattice of marine structures. Cyber-physical testing* and applications to marine technology: floating wind turbines, sail-assisted propulsion of ships, estimation of nonlinear wave loads, active truncation.

*Cyber-physical testing is the real-time combination of experiments and simulations, orchestrated by a control system. It is a new method in marine technology that enables the experimental study of complex problems, a prominent example of which being the behaviour of floating wind turbines. 

 

Projects

I am leading the CYBERLAB project (NFR/KPN/2022-2025). CYBERLAB aims at studying offshore power grids that take the form of a lattice of marine structures, i.e. a vast set of floating structures interconnected by a shared mooring system in a scalable and cost-optimal way. Present simulation tools, experimental methods, and offshore standards are primarily developed for single floating bodies. Numerous additional challenges arise when it comes to the design and analysis of lattices, which have not been addressed thoroughly yet. CYBERLAB aims at developing radically new (cyber-physical) empirical methods to understand the dynamic behaviour of such lattices. The ultimate goal is to make the Norwegian offshore community able to design optimal and competitive lattices, and become a first-mover on the large-scale green energy market. CYBERLAB gathers international academic experts from NTNU, SINTEF Ocean and Aarhus University, supported by an outstanding team of experts from Equinor, Aker Offshore Wind, APL, Sevan SSP and Delmar Systems. The methods developed in CYBERLAB will be at the heart of the upcoming Ocean Space Centre in Norway.

I am also leading the OptiFLEX project. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, OptiFLEX aims at understanding which physical phenomena drive/limit coupled vibrations of large and optimized floating wind turbines (>20MW), which simplifying assumptions can be made during design analysis, while still capturing extreme response and fatigue damage? and how can sensor packages be designed optimally to monitor loads and fatigue damage in FWT parks? The project involves key companies: Equinor, Inocean, Odfjell Oceanwind, COWI, 4subsea, Sevan Deepwater Technology and Ocean Ventus. 

Background and education

Senior researcher at SINTEF Ocean since 2007 - Experimental Hydrodynamics. More than fifteen years experience preforming multi-disciplinary theoretical and experimental contract research, leading researcher teams (10 researchers), and leading large commercial projects.
