Background and activities

Shoji Tominaga received the B.E., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Osaka University, Osaka, Japan.  From 1976 to 2006, he had been with Osaka Electro-Communication University.  In 2006, he joined Chiba University, Japan, where he was a Professor (2006-2013), Dean (2011-2013), and a Specially Appointed Researcher (2013-2018) at Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science.  During1987-1988 he was a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Psychology, Stanford University. He is now a Professor at Department of Computer Science, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway, and also a Visiting Researcher at Nagano University, Japan.  His research interests include color/multispectral imaging and material appearance.  He serves as an editorial board member of Color Research and Application and a Co-chair of Computational Color Imaging Workshop.  He is a life fellow of IEEE, a fellow of IS&T, a fellow of SPIE, and a fellow of OSA.

Technical Accomplishment

Shoji Tominaga has made several important contributions to color image science and technology. His contributions, spanning more than forty years, range from the fundamentals of color imaging to its computer vision applications. He has contributed in particular reflection analysis, material appearance, color constancy, illuminant estimation, and spectral imaging.
