Research

Norwegian Centre for Sustainable Bio-based Fuels and Energy (Bio4Fuels)

Bio4Fuels use new technology to ensure efficient and sustainable use of biomass as renewable feedstock for heat, power and transportation.

Advancing biofuel pathways with regional climate change implications (BIOPATH)

We explore the interactions between future biofuel pathways, land transitions, and the regional climate to identify synergies between land management and biofuel strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Biofuels in deep sea shipping for climate change mitigation (Bio4-7Seas)

We assess the mitigation potential of biofuels for deep sea shipping by combining leading methods in biofuel systems, maritime disciplines, LCA, and climate science to ensure robust analyzes of the climate impact from the use of biofuels in shipping.

Strategies to Mitigate Pressures on Terrestrial Ecosystems from Multiple Stressors (MITISTRESS)

We study how ecosystems in Norway and the Tibetan Plateau of China response to multiple stressors like land use change, and climate change, generating new robust scientific knowledge to assist the design of land management policies in Norway and China.

European agriculture can cut emissions by 40 percent without reducing food production

A comprehensive survey led by Norwegian researchers shows that European agriculture can cut climate emissions by 40 percent while taking better care of nature than today, without reducing food production.

Moose can play a big role in global warming

Climate researchers have long known that large animals, like moose, could play a role in how much the Earth will warm due to climate change. But the question is, how much? New research shows the answer can be a lot.

Munching Moose Cool Forest Floors

Moose can cool boreal forests, according to a new study. They show that these large grazers expose gaps between trees, revealing a snowy forest floor that reflects light and keeps temperatures down.

Abandoned cropland helps make Europe cooler

As nations prepare to mitigate climate change, decision makers need to understand how land use fits into the climate equation. A new study looked at land use changes over two decades and found a major shift from cropland to forests.

Losing ground in biodiversity hotspots worldwide

Agriculture is eating into areas that are important in protecting some of the most biologically diverse places on the planet. Most of this new agricultural land is being used to grow cattle feed.

Envisioning a future where all the trees in Europe disappear

Global climate change is already affecting the globe, as demonstrated by shrinking polar ice cap, melting glaciers, and more intense heat waves. Now we conducted a radical thought experiment on how extreme land use changes could influence future climate.
