KomplemeNT – Norwegian Network for the Application of Cheminformatics and Non-Targeted Analysis in Applied Research
KomplemeNT

KomplemeNT is a Norwegian network initiative funded by the Research Council of Norway (2026–2027). The project brings together national research communities in non-target chemical analysis and cheminformatics, along with experts interested in relevant applications.
Events
Join us for the first in-person KomplemeNT science seminar, January 26th 2027 in Geilo, Norway. As part of the bi-annual Norwegian Society of Mass Spectrometry (NSMS) Conference, hosted in Geilo 24.-27. January 2027, KomplemeNT will host a seminar on January 26th from 10.00-14.00. The seminar is open to all attendees of the NSMS conference. More details about the program and registration will become available shortly (https://nsms.no/).
The network will organize several seminars and webinars throughout 2026–2027. These events will be open to all interested participants. Dates and registration information will be published on this page.
Please get in touch if you would like to receive updates via e-mail.
About the project
The use of machine learning and computational chemistry in environmental and analytical chemistry is a rapidly growing research field, which is increasingly gaining traction in applied research. The goal of KomplemeNT is to establish shared meeting arenas where industry-relevant and societally important challenges can be addressed in parallel with the development of tools capable of efficiently handling the type and scale of data produced by high-resolution analytical techniques.
The primary interest for partners in KomplemeNT is to support the adoption and application of non-target analysis (NTA) and cheminformatics beyond fundamental research. The network has identified a range of research needs and areas of application to focus on in the coming years.
Fundamental Research Needs
- Interpretation and utilization of large instrumental datasets from high-resolution analytical techniques
- Strategies for extracting, filtering, and prioritizing relevant data
- Elucidation and probabilistic identification of chemical structures without relying on databases
- Application of multivariate methods, machine learning, and computational chemistry to such datasets
Areas of Application
- Environmental monitoring
- Risk assessment of chemicals and complex mixtures
- “Safe and Sustainable by Design” (SSbD) materials development, use, and circular economy
- Food and seafood safety
- Fish health and welfare
- Sustainable aquaculture
- Coexistence of coastal industries
- Emissions from urban environments
- Water and wastewater systems
- Biomonitoring in ecology (ecotoxicology) and human health (internal and external exposome)
- Applications in biochemistry and medical technology
The network will collaborate to develop shared best practices for applying cheminformatics and related methods across disciplines. Do you want to join us? Please reach out to see how we can connect.
KomplemeNT is led by the research group Environmental and Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Biomedical Science, NTNU.
