null UTFORSK delegation to Japan 20-27 March 2026

As part of the UTFORSK project SuReAl (Norwegian-Japanese collaboration on Sustainability and Recycling in Aluminium alloy development) a delegation of 12 persons from NTNU, SINTEF, and Hydro visited Japan in the period 20-27 March.

The SuReAl project is hosted by the NTNU (Depth of Physics and Dept of Materials Science and Engineering) with Norwegian partners in addition to NTNU: SINTEF, Hydro, Speira, and with Japanese partners: University of Toyama, Tokyo Science, Kyushu University, Nagoya Institute of Technology, UACJ, YKK, Tokyo Aluminium and KobelCo). The delegation from Norway included Profs. Randi Holmestad, Knut Marthinsen and Dr. Tina Bergh from NTNU, master students (Eila Bergene, Magnus S Fallmyr, and Liesbeth Campbell) and PhD candidates Inga, Konow Thyra Rolfseng, Stine Bratlie and Håkon Korsvold) funded PhD candidates and representatives from SINTEF (Dr. Calin Marioara) and Hydro (Dr. Eva Mørtsell), almost everyone with close connections to SFI Physmet. The visit included a full day scientific seminar at University of Toyama, with presentations from all the Norwegian participants and from our Japanese partners, and a JIML (Japanese Institute of Light metals seminar at Nagoya Institute of Technology on Precipitation Behavior and Alloy Design across Aluminum Alloy Systems, with a presentation by Dr. Calin Marioara). In addition, we had visits to UACJ (in Ngoya, A world-leading comprehensive aluminum manufacturer, with a strong focus on recycling), YKK (Kurobe/Toyama; The world's largest zipper manufacturer, also producing other fastening products, architectural products (incl. in aluminium), plastic hardware and industrial machinery and JEOL (A major developer and manufacturer of electron microscopes and other scientific instruments with headquarter in Tokyo).

The stay in Japan also included possibilities for some sightseeing and to experience Japanese culture and good food. As always, when visiting Japan, we had a very nice time - this time we also came at the same time as the cherry blossom (Sakura).
