About the course

Course content

The course will give basic introduction to the building process, the most important framework influencing the project, and strategies for conducting a project. The subject will give knowledge about the plan process with emphasize on planning and building regulations in Norway. The building regulation process will emphasize on the advanced conference, applications and plans of control for the design and the execution of projects.
Topics that will be dealt with;
- architectonic quality
- processes and activities
- actors, roles and tasks
- project framework
- process strategies
Special focus will be on the premises in the building laws and regulations, and how this is managed in different projects. This will be illustrated with examples from several projects where the relation between the premises and the development of the projects will be discussed. Focus is on the interplay between the several actors in the building process.
The project will include an evaluation of a building regulation in Trondheim.

Learning outcome

The student will have a thorough knowledge of the planning system and general principles and intentions in planning and building legislation.
The student has good knowledge of the building process and what the main frame factors are. The student also has good knowledge of the different strategies for execution of building projects and the various elements included there.
The student has the basic skills to analyze a case reagarding how the planning and building legislation, execution strategies and other framework conditions influence a project.
Students should have a good understanding of different roles and tasks related to the execution of a project and how this is done in practice from both the architect, developer and the authorities perspective.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and project work/case studies.
Project work individually or in groups.

Required previous knowledge

Completed three years basic courses in architecture, bachelor in architecture or equivalent, or equivalent level (Bachelor) in engineering science and technology.
