About the course
Course content
The curriculum is composed of modules on the following topics:
- Conservation theory and principles
- Wood properties
- Environment, climate and decay
- Wooden structures
- Conservation of wooden objects
- Conservation of wooden buildings
- Surface treatment
The course is organised in two parts: a preparatory online part, and a practical part in Norway. The digital part is comprised of lectures, discussions, and group work, and requires approximately 25 hours of work per week. The lectures will be held by acknowledged experts from the different fields from different parts of the World.
The practical part of the course lasts two weeks of full-time program, including excursions, visits, and practical exercises. In this part, the theoretical knowledge that the course participants have acquired in the digital part, will be applied and tied to concrete problems and tasks.
Learning outcome
The main objectives of the course are:
- To give the course participants the theoretical and practical knowledge essential for diagnosing causes of deterioration and for selecting the most appropriate methods of conservation and restoration of wood
- To extend the knowledge of the participants beyond their own professions for a broader understanding of different aspects and approaches to wood conservation.
- To bring people of various professions from different countries and cultures together for a mutual learning experience, drawing on different experiences, practices and approaches to wood conservation and use of wooden materials.
Learning methods and activities
The activities in the course are based on lectures, group work, assignments and practical tasks. A detailed course plan will be presented at the start of the semester.
This course is offered to international students and will be taught in English.

The candidates get accredited with 15 credits from NTNU if the course is passed. Attendance in each of the course’s parts (digital in the first part and physical in the second), active participation, submission of assignments and a final group exam, is required in order to pass the course.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Externally funded continuing education for the Faculty of Architecture and Design - second degree level (ARDEVU)
Recommended previous knowledge
The course is held in English. It is therefore important that the participants have a good level of English, both oral and written.
Required previous knowledge
Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience within conservation of wooden buildings or artifacts.
