About the course

Course content

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to texts from influential schools of modern literary theory. The course also emphasizes basic matters of aesthetic and literary theory. The curriculum covers theoretic essays (approx. 600 pages).

Learning outcome

The candidate will after successfully completing this course have KNOWLEDGE about:

- key concepts of literary theory

- different schools of literary theory

The candidate will after successfully completing this course be SKILLED in:

- employ her/his acquired knowledge in theoretical analysis

- presenting his/her knowledge of theory in writing.

The candidate’s GENERAL COMPETENCY includes:

- an understanding of the dynamics and interrelations of different schools of theory

- a basic understanding of the function of literary theory in a historical context

Learning methods and activities

Lectures/seminars. Students are expected to participate actively in class by making oral presentations, comments, etc.

7 days home examination of approximately 3000 words.

Course materials

A reading list will be available first day of class. Students that want to use an alternative curriculum must apply for this by handing in an alternative reading list to the department for approval. Deadline is 10th October in the autumn semester and 10th March in the spring semester.
