ARK3300 - Master's Thesis in Archaeology - Project Design
This course is aimed at 3rd semester MPhil students from Ghana wishing to advance and further develop their MPhil thesis projects. During the semester, in addition to organized group seminars, NORPART-students will receive supervision from assigned supervisors from NTNU. By the end of the course, students are expected to have completed drafts for introductory chapters including research questions, history and state of research on particular subjects of their thesis subjects and chapters covering the thesis methodology and theoretical framework. Another aim of this course is to introduce NORPART-students to different aspects of Norwegian cultural heritage management and archaeology. This will be achieved through organized excursions to relevant locations/institutions and by group and discussions.
Students who have passed this course, will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
- Can design, initiate and complete a plan for academic study and text production
- Can independently select and evaluate relevant academic literature for individual and group study or presentations.
- Can present research questions and literature to groups of different sizes.
- Are able to employ different strategies and techniques in order to commence and continue academic writing projects.
Learning methods and activities
The course-work comprises primarily of self-study combined with regular group seminars based on the course reading-list. The course begins with a kick-off seminar focusing on practical introductions and semester planning as well as a library course at the Gunnerus Library of NTNU. Students will complete a semester plan and regular progress reports. During the semester students will present their projects for their Norwegian student colleagues and can also take part in a regular MA seminar in archaeology. Regular individual and group supervision will be offered based on the student's draft chapter texts . Other course activities will include short visits and excursions to relevant archaeological sites or institutions in Trondheim and the surrounding region. Attendance and participation at a minimum of 75% of all teaching and learning activities is required in order to pass this course. Students must also complete all written assignments to be included in the portfolio. At the end of the semester, students will submit their course portfolio with the chapter drafts written through the semester. The students must also give oral presentations of their project and semester progress. At the end of the semester the written and oral portfolio and individual attendance sheets will be reviewed by the exam commission.
Recommended previous knowledge
This course is primarily available to MPhil-students in archeology from the University of Ghana who have been admitted to NTNU under the NORPART-project Intercultural historical studies. However, the course can in some situations be available for other foreign and Norwegian students.
Required previous knowledge
Students must have completed the two first semesters of an MPhil-degree from the University of Ghana (UG). Students must also have completed a draft project description and been assigned a supervisor in Ghana. Students should be proficient in both oral and written English.
A compulsory course reading-list of c.500 pages will be provided at the start of the semester. The students are also expected to find relevant literature during the semester.
