Course content

Research shows that regular physical activity can provide positive health effects physically, mentally, and socially. The course addresses disease prevention and the health promotion of participation in physical activity and exercise with emphasis on the most frequently occurring lifestyle diseases in Norway. The focus is evidence-based medicine. In addition, the course covers sports participation and health. Exercises and group work involve practical activities, demonstrations and written assignments.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
The student will have knowledge of the following:
• Disease prevention and health promotion, with emphasis on physical activity for different ages and groups
• Effects of physical activity and exercise on lifestyle diseases
• Motivational communication through lifestyle changes
• Basic research methods and critical use of references to evaluate potential biological and psychological effects of health effects through physical activity participation
• Participation in sports, and body image and eating disorders
• Sports, menstrual cycle, and fertility
• Some sports injuries and first aid.

Skills
The student will be able to:
• Acquire, critically evaluate, and refer to research-based literature on physical activity and health
• Apply knowledge about physical activity and health for different groups in the population
• Contribute to society through strengthening physical activity in public health.

Learning methods and activities

Up to 48 hours lectures/exercises/group work. Exchange students interested in the course must consult the Department for possible admission.

Compulsory assignments

  • 70 % participation in exercises.

Required previous knowledge

* The course is reserved for students admitted to the bachelor's programme in Human Movement Science and bachelor's programme in Social Sciences and Sports Sciences.
