Course content

immunohematology and transfusion medicine, including blood-type serology and medical uses of blood products medical microbiology, including bacteriology, virology, mycology and protozoology, infectious diseases work environment and internal control systems quality assessments in blood banking, official approval systems, good manufacturing practice research theory and methods literature studies interprofessional work

Learning outcome

Læringsutbytte - Kunnskap: On completion of the course students will acquire knowledge about the normal processes in the human body, and processes that reflects diseases in one or more of the body¿s organs understand why specific biochemical principles are being used to measure or determine certain substances have knowledge about infectious diseases understand biological variation and the clinical relevance of the results from the analyses have knowledge of blood type serology and medical uses of blood products have the knowledge of the use of electronic blood x-matching data programs Læringsutbytte - Ferdigheter: On completion of the course students will be able to document the quality of the laboratory¿s instruments and technical procedures. be able to evaluate the medical validity of the result of the test, i.e. quality of the analysis in comparison to the medical problem be able to give priority to one test before another in case of emergency be able to use electronic blood x-matching data programs Læringsutbytte - Kompetanse: On completion of the course students will have knowledge of blood type serology and medical uses of blood products have knowledge in cross-profession cooperation have knowledge in medical microbiology

Learning methods and activities

Pedagogiske metoder: Lectures (up to 20 x 2 hours) and laboratory work (up to 10 x 4 hours). Emphasis is placed on student active learning forms, group assignments, project assignments and simulation. Compulsary work: Passed compulsory laboratory courses. Approved oral examination after each assignment as part of the microbiology laboratory course. Approved compulsory laboratory work and journals from the assignments. Practical test must be passed before entry to written examinations.

Microbiology- part of this exam is a written individual scientific project, based on one of three defined problem-areas. Instructions on this portifolio assessment will be given at the start of the semester. Individual guidance will be given, when the student has produced an approved problem statement. Transfusion part of this exam will be accomplished in the same way.

Both transfusionmedicine and microbiology must be passed to obtain a grade in this course.

Specific conditions

Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.

Admission to a programme of study is required.

Passed exam in BI101714 Medical laboratory technology. Passed compulsory laboratory courses, including laboratory journals in BI201109 Instrumental analyses, BI221412 Immunology, BI202512 Medical microbiology
