About the course

Course content

Theories and terminology for analyses in traffic management, traffic safety and transport demand.

Introduction to transport demand calculations, including all modes and purposes.

Calculations and analyses of traffic management and traffic safety in the road system.

This is a basic course on which following road and transport related courses build.

The course is taught every second year

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The students should know:

  • Four step method for transport demand model
  • Traffic flow theory
  • Principles of traffic management, including signal control

Skills

The students would be able to:

  • Carry out basic transport demand calculation
  • Carry out capacity calculations for traffic on road stretches and intersection
  • Dimension signal controlled intersections

General competence

The students can:

  • Use spreadsheet (Excel) for statistical and traffic analysis
  • Interpret relevant information from different data sources and relevant analyses
  • Present and document analyses and evaluations in a clear and structured way

Further on evaluation

Obligatory assignments must be approved in order to attend the exam. Home exam accounts for 70% of the grade and a project work for the remaining 30%. Home exam may be changed into oral in case of a re-sit exam.
