Course content
Arithmetics and algebra, exponentiafunctions and logarithms, differentiation, integrations, trigonometry, errors inn analytical analysis, probability calculations, stochastic variables, probability distributions, descriptive statistics, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing and linear regression.

Knowledge
The candidate:
- has knowledge on good techniques for algebraic manipulations
- has knowledge on mathematical logical thinking
- has knowledge on the use of mathematical calculations
- has knowledge on analytical errors in laboratory work
- has knowledge regarding probability calculations
- has knowledge on stochastic variables and probability distributions
- has knowledge on different methods within hypothesis testing
Skills
The candidate:
- can perform calculations on and reshape mathematical expressions with symbols and numbers
- can present experimental data graphically and using key numbers
- can treat linear functions, power functions, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, and trigonometric functions and differentiate such functions
- can calculate integrals and explain practical interpretations
- can perform basic probability calculations
- can choose probability models and perform calculations on these
- can calculate confidence intervals for expectation
- can perform hypothesis tests regarding expectation
- can calculate the linear regression line and coefficient of correlation
- can use Excel to calculate probabilities and test hypothese
General competency
The candidate:
- can use mathematics, statistics and probability calculations to understand calculations on measurement results and present these to others
- has an understanding of mathematics, statistics and probability as basis for further studies

Lectures and excercises including excercises using Excel spreadsheet.

Further on evaluation
The compulsory assignments consist of five digital calculation exercises which must all be approved in order for the student to take the exam. The requirements for approval of the digital calculation exercises, will be published through the learning management system.
Permitted aids on the exam:
- Approved calculator in accordance with NTNUs support material code B-D "specific basic calculator".
- A digital formula sheet is included with the exam.
Re-sit exam: August. In the event of a re-sit exam, the written exam can be changed to an oral exam.

Required previous knowledge
This course is restricted and reserved for registered students in the Bachelor program in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, Bachelor program in Biotechnology, Ålesund and Bachelor Program in Life Sciences and Laboratory Technology.
