About

About the course

Course content

Concrete structures: Design principles for concrete. Limit states and stress strain relationship for concrete and reinforcement. Design in ultimate limit state for axial force, bending moment and shear force for columns, beams and slabs. Calculation of deformations and cracks in serviceability limit state.

Concrete technology: Material properties, mix design and production

Learning outcome

Concrete Structures 1 is a course within design of concrete structures and concrete technology. The course presents the theoretical background for the methods of analysis and design as implemented in the design codes for reinforced concrete structures, for the time being Eurocode 2.

Concrete Structures 1 has these learning objectives:

Knowledge:

  • Mechanical behaviour of concrete and reinforcement steel under short- and long term loading
  • Design and resistance in ultimate limit state for elements subjected to axial and shear forces, bending moments and combination of these
  • Calculation and controll of displacements and crack widths in serviceability limit state
  • Detailing of different concrete members.
  • Concrete technology, including material properties, mixing and production

Skills:

  • Design beams and slabs subjected to shear force and bending
  • Design columns subjected to axial force
  • Calculate displacements and crack widths in slabs and beams
  • Describe a concrete mix and the production process and casting process

General competence:

  • Design and production of simple concrete structures subjected to static loading according to Eurocode 2.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and compulsory calculation exercises. 8 out of 10 exercises must be approved to be admitted to the exam.

Compulsory assignments

  • Exercises

Further on evaluation

Compulsory submissions must be passed in order to pass a written exam.

If there is a re-sit exam, the examination may be changed from written to oral.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
